Local currency

The currency is Japanese yen (JPY). 1 USD is about 90-100 JPY, and 1 EUR is about 130-140 JPY, depending on the exchange rate.

Cash is the most widely accepted method of payment. Major credit cards are widely accepted, except in some small sole traders. Traveler's cheques are only accepted for exchange in banks and post offices, and in general, cannot be used to purchase goods and services. Foreign exchange can be performed in banks, a limited number of hotels. Bank counters are open 9 am to 3 pm, post offices financial services from 9 am to 4 pm.

Climate and temperatures in Kyoto

In May, the climate in Kyoto is mild in the Daytime and night time.
Sweaters and jackets are not needed during daytime. The maximum temperature is 24C / 75F and the minimum temperature is 13C / 56F.

Electricity

Mains electricity is supplied at 100 volts AC at the frequency of 60 Hertz in Kyoto. Most portable computers and cameras are internationally compatible but you are advised to check your equipment before departure. Mains sockets require a Type A plug and you are advised to obtain an adaptor before departure if needed. Type A plugs have two flat blades and are used in the US and Canada too.

Insurance

The IPAC'10 organizers do not accept liability for individual medical, travel or personal insurance, and participants are strongly advised to take out their own personal insurance.

VAT

Consumption tax is a flat rate of 5% on all purchases. There are no additional local taxes. The displayed price on goods and services is required by law to be tax-inclusive. Receipts and bills often indicate tax and service charge for your reference.
