Exhibition and Experience of Braiding (Kumihimo)

Tuesday Morning, 25 May (from 10:00 a.m. to around noon)
A demonstration of braiding (Kumihimo) will be performed by a traditional craft successor in Uji-city, Kyoto Prefecture. In parallel, practice of braiding can be experienced upon request for a limited number of persons (20), at a fee of fee 1800 Yen per person. It takes almost 60 minutes and can produce a strap usable for example, for a handy phone and a key holder. See the website (http://www.showen.co.jp/). The exhibition will take place on the 1st floor of the Event Hall while the actual braiding class will take place t on the 2nd floor of the Event Hall.

Exhibition of Fan Making

Wednesday Morning, 26 May (from 10:00 a.m. to around noon)
Traditional Japanese fan fabrication will be demonstrated. See the website (http://www.onishi-kyosendo.jp/). The demonstration will be performed on the 1st floor of the Event Hall.

　 　

Experience the ‘Way of Tea’

Thursday Morning, 27 May (from 10:00 AM to around noon)
Before the keynote speech on “The Spirit of Tea” by the former Urasenke Grand Tea Master, Dr. Sen Genshitsu, we will provide a chance to experience a bowl of traditional Japanese tea, at the Cocktail Lounge of the Kyoto International Conference Center. (Just above the Garden to left of the Main Hall.) Tea will be served by Randy Channell Soei, a tea master from the Urasenke tradition. Up to 40 persons can enjoy the Japanese Tea by application beforehand at the registration desk. There will be a small fee of JPY 300 to cover the cost of the Japanese sweet served before the tea.

Nara Afternoon Tour (6,600 Japanese Yen)

Todaiji Temple
Todaiji is one of Japan's most famous and historically significant temples and a landmark of Nara. Todaiji was constructed in 752 as the head temple of all provincial Buddhist temples of Japan. Not only is Todaiji housing Japan's largest bronze Buddha statue (Daibutsu), but it is also the world's largest wooden building.

Nara Park
Nara Park is a large park in central Nara. The park is home to hundreds of freely roaming deer. Considered in Shinto to be messengers of the gods, Nara's nearly 1200 deer have become a symbol of the city and have been designated a natural treasure.

Kasuga Shrine
Kasuga Shrine is Nara's most celebrated shrine. It was established at the same time as the capital and is dedicated to the deity responsible for the protection of the city. Kasuga Shrine is famous for its lanterns, which have been donated by worshipers. Hundreds of bronze lanterns can be found hanging from the buildings, while as many stone lanterns line the approaches to the shrine.

Stroll through Sagano Bamboo Grove
Your morning walk begins at Sagano, northwest of the Kyoto Basin, with a stroll through the verdant Sagano Bamboo Grove surrounded by mountains in the greater area of Arashiyama.

Jojakkoji Temple

Tenryuji Temple
Tenryuji, located in the center of Arashiyama, was built in 1339 and has been ranked first among Kyoto's "Five Great Zen Temples". It is famous for its landscape garden, which unlike the temple buildings has survived in its original form.

Togetsukyo Bridge
Literally meaning "Crossing Moon Bridge", Togetsukyo with Mt. Arashiyama as backdrop is the symbol of Arashiyama. Riverside parks provide space for a pleasant break.
